The ultimate Fast Ford? This homologation special blends stunning performance with enough comfort to make this Cossie a decent long-distance partner.

Background:

Building on the success of the Sierra Cosworth, Ford transplanted much of the Sierra’s running gear into the more compact Mk5 Escort shell, with the hope of winning the World Rally Championship.

To homologate the car under 'Group A' regulations, a minimum of 2,500 road-going examples of the car had to be produced, so Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler at Ford’s SVO operation set about incorporating the Cosworth YBT 2-litre, 224bhp (227PS) four-cylinder turbocharged engine and 5-speed, four-wheel drive transmission into the as-yet unreleased Mk5 Escort, penned by Stephen Harper at MGA Developments in Coventry, which also designed the outrageous (and highly-effective) aero kit.

After the initial 2,500 examples had been built by Karmann in Germany, production continued due to high demand, the later cars fitted with smaller, faster reacting Garrett T25 turbos and a simpler, more road-robust electronic ignition system, the power unit then referred to as a YPT. Production stopped after some 7,145 examples had left the production line, as the car would be unable to meet new EU drive-by noise regulations.

The car:

This Escort RS Cosworth is a UK-supplied right-hand drive example, which has covered a shade over 72,000 miles in 28 years – enough to ensure that everything works as it should but not mega mileage. It’s in remarkable condition, with all its original Auralis Blue paintwork, having always been garaged and only taxed, tested and insured for summer use.

It remains in excellent, standard condition, with the exception of a full stainless steel exhaust system with bespoke catalytic converter, installed earlier in 2024.

The black leather interior is in excellent condition and features all the LUX specification elements including an electric sunroof, electric heated mirrors, a heated windscreen, heated washer jets, leather steering wheel, electric windows, carpeted door bins and those super comfy and supportive Recaro leather seats for driver and passenger.

The enthusiast vendor is also including Ford overalls, a Ford Escort Cosworth fleece, a rear boot cover, a Ford-badged car cover and a fire extinguisher, as well as the car’s comprehensive history file, documenting this well-cared-for car’s life – not least the belt-change service undertaken in 2023.
