SUMMARY
A fine example of a Mercedes Benz classic roadster, fresh to market after 24 years of current private ownership and just two previous owners.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Mercedes-Benz has been building its SL sports cars since 1952, when US importer, Max Hoffman, suggested a street version of the hugely sophisticated 300 SL sports-racer. Those initial models were highly exotic and way beyond the means of most mere mortals but in 1955, a smaller model was launched, the 190 SL, which was attractive, sexy and – crucially – far more affordable. An instant sales success, the 190SL was offered solely as an open roadster (the SL could be ordered as a coupé or roadster) with a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine.
The 190 was superceded in 1963 by the car that truly set the bar for all future SLs, the Paul Bracq-penned W113 model, powered by a six-cylinder engine and offering automatic transmission as well as manual 'boxes. Handsome, luxurious and distinctive (particularly with its concave ‘Pagoda Roof’ look) it established the open Benz as a cruiser, with impeccable credentials.
Through the R107 range (1971-1989) the SL continued to find eager buyers for its suave boulevardier looks and feel, as engines grew from the 2.8-litre straight-six at launch to options such as a 5.5-litre V8 by the time the R129 model replaced it in 1989.
The R129 was the first Mercedes to feature a fully automatic hydraulically-operated fabric convertible top, with V8 and later V12 engines in the range, in part to answer criticism that the SL had become a pastiche of a sportster. With V8s ranging up to 6-litres and V12s up to a mighty 7.3-litres, some with serious AMG attention, the R129 SL became a real powerhouse, while still retaining the luxury that SL buyers have come to expect.
The car:
On offer here is a UK-supplied right-hand drive example that is fresh to market, coming from 24-years of current private ownership and looking handsome in its black paint, sitting four-square on 5-spoke AMG alloys. The luxurious grey leather interior is still a fine place to spend time and looks as little-used as the rest of the car.
This SL has clearly been well cared-for, as there is a full and really good history accompanying the car, detailing the investment it has received under the long-term caring ownership. The details of the service history can be sent to interested parties by enquiring directly to Harry Whale at the contact details provided.
The car has completed less than 88,000 miles and is showing just two former keepers on the V5. It is in fantastic condition, a very good example and one on which we welcome and encourage your earliest enquiry, so that we can discuss the car in more detail.
Summary:
A handsome R129 SL, with just two former keepers, low miles and a great history. Do you even need sunshine to justify owning such a magnificent looker?
