SUMMARY

A true labour of love, this superb XJ-R is fresh from a major restoration.

DESCRIPTION

Background:

For 51 years, Jaguar’s flagship saloon was known globally by just two letters; XJ. The original XJ6 was launched in 1968, replacing a confused range of models encompassing the Mk2’s successor, the S-Type and the larger MkX/420G model, from which were carried over a number of styling cues, the redoubtable XK six-cylinder engines and the new all-independent rear suspension, which was to endow generations of XJs with their superlative ride-control and comfort.

Four years into the model’s life, the stunning 5.3-litre V12 was added to the model range – a remarkable statement of self-belief by Jaguar and one that endowed their flagship with astonishing silky performance, befitting one of the world’s greatest cars.

Through Series 1, 2 and 3, the XJ6 – along with its 12-cylinder brethren and Daimler cousins, sold strongly until they were replaced by the striking XJ40, breathing new life into the venerable model range. Among the many changes in the new models came a new six-cylinder power unit, the AJ6 and modern, more angular styling.

The introduction of the X300 model range in 1994 heralded a return to the 'quad round headlights and eyebrows' face that had defined the XJ for decades and that distinctive look was carried over into the subtly restyled X308 model range that debuted in 1997. Major revisions to the XJ40-derived running gear and interior kept the big Jag on a par with its rivals, while still exuding the class and elegance that loyal buyers expected from their Big Cats and all-new V8 engines, the 3.2 and 4-litre AJ-V8s provided the urge required to waft at pace – especially in supercharged XJ-R form, where near-supercar performance was available.

The car:

The owner of this XJ-R completed its major restoration just 250 miles ago, striving to return it to as near 'new' condition as possible.

A full strip and repaint has been carried out in the car’s original colour of Sapphire Blue. At the same time, a new passenger floor, seatbelt mounts and a pair of new wings were fitted. The underside was treated with Lanogard rust protection at the same time.

The engine has had all the cooling system pipes replaced, the tensioners have been replaced and a fresh service including oils and plugs has just been carried out.

A CATZ adaptive suspension damper upgrade has been fitted, along with new discs and pads and the reconditioned alloys roll on good Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

The ivory leather interior is in excellent condition, with a subtle age-related patina appropriate to its years. There is a Harman Kardon Sounds system with 6-CD changer fitted and the doors feature Pioneer speakers.

The car has been kept under cover for the past 14 years and has covered 62,800 miles. It has a fresh MOT with no lights on the dash and comes with a full service history, including the original book pack, along with a letter from the dealer to the first owner regarding the specification. The car also features an original full-sized spare with under-bonnet toolkit (still in its cellophane), the original First Aid Kit, oil can bag and a genuine soft indoor car cover.

Summary:

Jaguar’s ultimate 'Iron Fist In A Velvet Glove'. The XJ-R will scare Ferraris, while also wafting its occupants around in leather-and-wood luxury. What’s not to love?
