SUMMARY
The 50th Anniversary models are among the rarest and most collectable of Land Rover Defenders and this example has been brought back to a superb standard by its long-term owner at considerable expense.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Land Rover’s venerable Defender series debuted in 1983, taking over from the tried-and-trusted ‘Series’ Landies, so beloved by generations of farmers, soldiers, explorers and adventurers. A design icon that’s as globally-recognised as a London black cab or double-decker bus, the Defender took the all-wheel drive, go-anywhere, do-anything Land Rover into a new era, introducing improved road manners thanks to its all-coil spring suspension and permanent all-wheel drive with its lockable centre differential – both adopted from the Range Rover.
Given a production volume of more than two million units, from the early ‘Series’ models to the very last Defender, their distinctive shape remains a very common sight, globally. Much less common, however, are special limited editions – and few come more limited than the 50th Anniversary models. The model was produced – surprise, surprise – to celebrate 50 years of Land Rover production, in extremely restricted numbers, just 1,071 worldwide with a mere 385 allocated to the UK market.
Based on a North American Spec (NAS) Defender 90, featuring the 190hp 4.0-litre V8, automatic transmission and air conditioning, the UK and Europe models were further differentiated from other examples by being offered solely in Atlantis Blue and featured an external roll-over protection cage, making them even more distinctive.
The car:
This fine example of the 50th Anniversary Defender is a UK-supplied model (number GB 061) and comes from a 17-year+ ownership in the condition you’d expect, following a no-expense-spared renovation in January 2020.
The Defender received a full repaint, as well as a number of new panels, including both doors, which are all as well-fitting as is expected from a durable workhorse – even a comfortable and highly-specced example like this – that has been used and enjoyed.
The original bull-bars with spotlights, wing-top chequer plate panels, Safety Devices roll-over cage and pop-up sunroof are all present and in good condition, as are the original five-spoke alloys, finished in Anthracite with polished rims on good BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres.
The Raleigh cloth front seats and rear drop-downs are all in good condition and starting to develop a patina commensurate with this Landie’s age. A Pioneer DAB head unit has been added to the traditional interior fitments.
The vendor reports that the 4.0-litre V8 produces the expected creamy power delivery and sonorous soundtrack, with smooth shifting from the automatic transmission. New springs and dampers were fitted during the renovation, so road manners are first class.
The car comes with a bulging history file, starting with the original owner’s manual and service book, and a host of invoices, including those for more than £14,500 in January 2020 which covered near rear quarters, doors, tailgate and full bare-metal respray along with many other extras such as a DAB radio and new tow bar.. This rare machine has covered 91,037 mile vehicle has a fresh MOT, until June 2025.
Summary:
Defenders are becoming increasingly popular and hard to find in superb condition. This real rarity ticks all the collector and enjoyment boxes and will always turn heads.
