SUMMARY
The Porsche 996 was the car that took the company into the 21st Century and this example is ready for many more years of stirring service.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The Type 996, introduced in 1998, marked a sea-change for Porsche’s venerable 911 range – one which horrified some purists but which also laid the ground work for the next half-century and probably beyond… the flat-six motor was, for the first time, water-cooled!
Once the fulminations of the old-school die-hards had died down, it quickly became apparent that the new model, far from being the death of the 911, was exactly the injection of life that the old girl needed, to propel her into the 21st century.
Handling was improved, comfort and safety levels raised and a raft of models were offered - naturally-aspirated and turbo-charged, two and four-wheel drive – all clothed in a new style body, sharing a look that had debuted on the 'little brother' Boxster. The new models continued to up the ante and served to increase the appeal of Porsche’s most iconic asset.
The car:
This early 996 Carrera 2 comes in its original silver coachwork, with contrasting black leather interior. The paintwork presents well and the vendor suggests that it has probably had some attention in the past. There is the odd chip, commensurate with age and use with no signs of rust coming through and the body still looks to be in fine condition.
The vendor – a historic race and rally specialist – has been using the car for the last few months and reports that it has been both reliable and excellent fun, everything feeling good about the car and representing a lot of 911 for the money.
The car came with little previous service history but does have invoices for the critical IMS bearing, along with several MOTs. The vendor states that the car has been treated to a thorough mechanical check and service, with various seals and trim components being replaced and that the central locking has been reprogrammed with two new keys coded to suit.
The car has covered 111,000 miles and appears to be a very good usable example of the first of the new generation of 911s.
Summary:
A well used and well preserved example of a landmark Porsche at a very affordable price. What’s not to love?
