SUMMARY
A rare and desirable early Boxster S, with low mileage and full service history, nicely presented and at a very affordable price.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Porsche launched the Boxster in 1996, effectively offering a ‘baby-911’ for the first time since the four-cylinder 912 of the 1960s and its first model available only as a roadster since the 914. The Boxster – Type 986 in Porsche nomenclature – used the same bonnet, front wings, headlights, interior and architecture as the new 996-model 911, further adding to the baby-911 feel.
Unlike its distant ancestors, the Boxster was not powered by a four-cylinder engine, rather it was launched with a 2.5-litre version of the water-cooled flat-six that would also appear in the forthcoming 996, offering much of the performance and aural delight of its big brother 911s. In the Boxster, the engine was mod-mounted, whereas it remained rear-mounted in the 996. For the 2000 model year, the capacity was upped to 2.7 litres for the base spec with a 3.2-litre unit installed in the new Boxster S.
Grant Larson’s clever design – inspired by the 356 Cabriolet, Speedster and 550 Spyder – was an instant hit and the near-perfect weight distribution of the mid-engined Boxster, allied to fine handling, that flat-six soundtrack and competitive pricing ensured that sales were strong immediately. Commonality of parts with the new 996 aided cost-effectiveness for Porsche, while cementing the relationship between 911 and Boxster in the minds of buyers.
The car:
This early Boxster S was first registered in October 2000 and has covered just under 56,000 miles with its five previous owners, meaning that it has been enjoyed in moderation. And what’s not to enjoy? With the largest Boxster power plane, the 3.2-litre six, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, it’s an enticing prospect.
Presenting well with its triple black coachwork, matching black leather interior and original Porsche alloys on Michelin Sport tyres, it’s undeniably a handsome beast and the cockpit will be a fine place to spend time, with an adjustable steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Porsche CD2-22 music system and air conditioning, for when you don’t want the electrically-operated black mohair soft top down.
Detail touches like red brake calipers, logo sill step plates and floor mats and a rear wind diffuser indicate that this Boxster has been cherished by its former keepers and there is a full service history to confirm their care and attention to its health. The car will come with a fresh MOT, ready to be enjoyed.
Summary:
You could buy a 911 Cabriolet but for a fraction of the price this delightful Boxster S offers almost all of the fun and Summer driving at a much more affordable price.
