SUMMARY
A superb example of Yamaha’s landmark R1, enthusiast-owned and wonderfully refreshed – on the button and begging to be used.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Released in 1998 the Yamaha YZF-R1 – or simply R1 - took the superbike world by storm. Lighter, faster and more powerful than its rivals, it represented a step change in what a sports bike could be.
The extraordinary performance came courtesy of a very compact 1,000cc five valve per cylinder 150bhp engine, mated to an equally compact 6-speed gearbox placed below it, all nestled in a state-of-the-art aluminium frame.
Performance was extremely strong, with the 0-60mph sprint taking just 2.9 seconds, while 100mph would be reached in 5.9 seconds as the machine rushed on to a top speed of 168mph, if the rider was brave enough.
The styling was classic Yamaha; bold and race-derived, but not over the top. The 4XV and the 2nd generation 5JJ were an instant sales success and guaranteed the model’s place amongst other pioneers in motorcycles hall of fame.
So good was the original formula, that for the year 2000 Yamaha barely changed the bike for the second generation 5JJ model, just subtly evolving the design with tweaks to gearing and the oil system, while minor bodywork and seating changes allowed for better long-duration ride handling.
The motorcycle:
This particular machine is a second generation 5JJ which has been enthusiast-owned and beautifully cared for, prior to a light restoration that very carefully kept the bike as original as possible.
Professionally re-painted a couple of years ago, it’s the beautiful paint that sets this bike apart from the scratched and cracked fairings of its peers.
This superb R1 wants for nothing, with the only divergence from standard being the highly desirable slip-on titanium Akrapovic exhaust pipe. It will be supplied serviced and with a fresh 12-month MOT.
Summary:
Mechanically perfect, this classic Yamaha is ready to be ridden and enjoyed or to be squirrelled away as an investment – if you can somehow resist the temptation of riding.
