DESCRIPTION
Background:
Luxury kit car experts, Royale, released their prestigious Windsor model in 1998. With a distinctive vintage look, echoing Rolls-Royces and Bentleys of the 1930s, the four-door model was intended for wedding car and private hire use. Unusually for a kit car, it came as a spacious five-seater Landaulette, offering the opportunity for the rear-seat passengers to ride in open-top mode, when the weather allowed.
The Windsor was available in factory-built or kit form for home assembly and the donor vehicle was usually a Ford Granada or Scorpio, offering a 2.9-litre V6 power unit and (usually) an automatic transmission, mounted in the substantial factory-built chassis. Ride quality from the well-sorted Ford running gear was excellent and the Windsor drove very well.
As befits a car portraying the quality of a bygone era, the reinforced fibreglass bodywork was of excellent quality, reinforced further with ‘Coremat’ and very much of the standard that Royale prided itself on, in its other models, the Drophead and Sabre. Self-builders needed time and commitment to do the car justice, but when well completed, with full leather upholstery and wooden dash, the feel matched the high-class styling. It is believed that around 50 Windsors were produced in total.
The car:
This Royale Windsor was built by the vendor’s late husband, to exacting standards. The build quality, fit and finish are exemplary, far exceeding the original kit, as builder Dan poured his heart and soul into it. The kit was in fact the very last to be supplied by Royale and was the builder’s second Windsor!
The car was fully assembled in 2004, around a 1990 Ford Granada Ghia automatic, with the 2.9-litre Cologne V6 producing the power. All major components were fully refurbished before fitting, so that the driving experience matched Dan’s expectations.
The exterior finish, in Rover ‘Damson’, is excellent, with an equally top-class luxurious interior in cream leather, accented by a professionally-crafted walnut dashboard and door cappings. The stylish black laundulette hood adds to the overall appeal and this superbly-built machine sits absolutely right, exuding class.
In excellent condition, the car is supplied with a fresh MOT.
Summary:
With all of the comfort and style of a vintage classic, plus reliable, sorted modern running gear, for weddings, events or as a delightful daily driver, the Royale Windsor will always turn heads and make its occupants smile.
