DESCRIPTION
Background:
Porsche’s Cayman debuted in 2006, a smaller coupé based on the hugely-successful Boxster, by that stage in its second iteration – the 987 – and offering much of the feel and drive of a 911, at a reduced price. Lauded as a superb driver’s car from launch, the Cayman and its Boxster sibling were Porsche’s best-selling models until the arrival of the Cayenne SUV and the second generation’s styling cues echoed the Carrera GT Hypercar.
The classic flat-six boxer power unit in water-cooled form, with differing capacities and states of tune, provided motivation for the 911 (rear-engined) as well as the Boxster and Cayman (both mid-engined.) For the entry-level Cayman, power came from a 2.7-litre unit while the S models boasted 3.2-litres, producing 280PS (276hp) and mated to a 6-speed manual transaxle, with Porsche’s 5-speed Tiptronic automatic as an option.
The car:
This stunning example of the 987 Cayman S sits resplendent in understated Meteor Grey Metallic coachwork, set off perfectly by optional 19-inch SportDesign rims, with the special-order wheel centre kit, while the handling benefits from Porsche Active Suspension Management, and bi-Xenon headlights aid the driver at night.
The black full leather interior is as fully-specced as the exterior, the driver nestling in heated, Adaptive Sports Seats, gripping a three-spoke multi-function wheel in smooth leather, controlling not just the car but the Porsche Communication Management system, with 6-disc CD autochanger, BOSE Surround Sound System, installed telephone module and the PCM Navigation module, while monitoring the steed’s health via Sport Chrono Package Plus. This Cayman S also benefits from fully automatic climate control and ParkAssist rear sensors and even boasts tailored OEM floor mats.
Despite the obvious attractions of this fully-loaded S, it has been used sparingly over its 16-year life, clocking up just 48,200 miles and has a full service history, being cared for in the Porsche dealer network and latterly by a marque specialist.
It is in immaculate condition, inside and out.
Summary: This understated and fully-optioned Cayman S represents a fantastic opportunity to sample Porsche’s legendary feel, handling and performance – backed by that distinctive flat-six bark – at a bargain price. One for the enthusiastic driver.
