SUMMARY

A very well-engineered, rarely used, and faithful recreation of the legendary GT40 in a fetching colour combination.

DESCRIPTION

The GT40 has its rightful spot in the car world Hall of Fame for its stunning and world shocking results by winning the 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 Le Mans 24 Hour Endurance race, toppling the seemingly unstoppable racing giant that was Ferrari. With race winning and period raced GT40s comfortably selling for mid-7 figure sums, with plenty of potential to reach 8 figures soon, it is no surprise that such a vast array of replicas, tributes and homages to this iconic racer have sprung up.

MDA was one of the finest replica GT40 builders in Europe, starting off as G T Developments during the 80s, building over 380 cars for clients between 1988-1994 before transitioning into MDA in 1994. With a growing customer list wanting individual car builds with differing specifications and increasing levels of accuracy required, MDA hit every marker with a level of confidence that can only come from experience. Unfortunately, despite their successes, they were still a small business which fell foul of the 2008 recession and closed its doors for good, now supplying GT40 parts under the name of G T Racing.

Before they closed, this fantastic Mk1 GT40 replica was already out the door and well on its way to completion. Registered with its first and only registered owner on 1st March 2012, the white paint contrasts well with the red striping giving the ‘beauty’ side to the car and a thumping Ford small block 302cu (5-litre) Windsor V8 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission providing the ‘beast’. The car has been thoroughly enjoyed since its completion, having taken part in classic car shows and local rallies within the UK, however it has only covered 6,017 miles from new having spent its recent years on display in a museum.

A lot of replicas can look and feel cheap, but we are pleased to say this MDA GT40 has quite the opposite effect. Looking at the braided lines within the engine bay, the Hi-Spec motorsport braking system and extravagant exhaust, you can clearly see that a significant amount of money was spent on this car to ensure the driving experience was as jaw dropping as the visual experience.

Despite being on display, the car was always kept in running and driving condition. Furthermore, it will come to the sale having received a mechanical once-over to instil maximum confidence to the buyer. Within the history file there is a build manual, photographs and a selection of invoices for servicing and maintenance over the years.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and whilst this is usually a glorified way of saying something has been copied, in this case one would argue that for the looks and sounds of a GT40 for 100 times less than the real deal, it's a fair compromise. Reasonably priced, low mileage and very well built, what more could you ask for?
