SUMMARY

The perfect modern pairing of a naturally-aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six and a 6-speed manual gearbox. A shade under 7,700 miles, freshly serviced and ready to go!

DESCRIPTION

The Porsche 911 had always been intended as a sports car and, whilst the badge held some status, it was not quite as exotic as a Ferrari, but it was infinitely better than anything else. Often a daily driver for its owner, Porsche’s reputation for reliability was a given, but capable of epic performance when required. By the mid-1990s, there were few manufacturers left that built proper two-seat, open top sports cars, and whilst the 911 became heavier with a more luxurious four-seat cabin filled with driver aids to rival Mercedes-Benz, a market emerged for a well-engineered but simpler convertible sports car. The Boxster was launched in 1996 as Porsche's first road vehicle to be originally designed as a roadster since 1969, and was an instant hit. Although cheaper than the 911, the demographic was nearly identical, and like the 911, there were some who wanted a well-appointed sports car for a daily commute and there were some who preferred something a bit faster, and not just quick, but engineered for speed.

Much like the Turbo and GT variants of the 911, and along the lines of 'horses for courses' the Boxster became the subject of serious attention Porsche engineers by the launch of the 981 model in 2012. Universally hailed, the Spyder was the most enthusiast-led version of the 981 Boxster, lighter by 30kg, longer by ten millimetres and lower by 11mm when compared with a Boxster GTS. The Spyder’s 3.8-litre engine was a detuned version of the one found in the 911 Carrera S with a steering rack taken from the 911 Turbo. Finally, the look was not forgotten with the addition of an elegant but sporty one-piece double-dented rear hood. For the first time a new Porsche had begun to tempt less affluent buyers away from the adverts for third-hand 911 Turbos and experienced journalists offered rave reviews for the Boxster Spyder, which stood firmly on its own merit.

First registered on 25th November 2015, our lady vendor bought the Porsche on 4th November 2020 on the recommendation of her late fiancé, a greatly-missed client of ours. Although fondly remembered by the team as an enthusiastic bidder, setting a few world records back in the day, it was his meticulous attention to detail and good humour as a vendor that we, and this consignor, appreciated the most.

Garaged alongside an eclectic collection of motorcars ranging from modern Ferraris to classic Jaguars, the Porsche saw off stiff competition as the preferred choice for driving to their Spanish holiday home. Regretfully consigned to auction, our vendor took advantage of the recent good weather to lower the roof and take the car out for one final drive. Serviced by Porsche Centre Brooklands, Surrey, in June this year, the car is presented to auction with just 7,695 miles from new.

A precisely engineered modern roadster for those who enjoy driving.
