2022 Toyota GR86 2.4 Boxer D-4S*

Background:

Toyota shocked their traditional buyers when they announced a joint venture with Subaru, developing a new range of small, light, powerful two-seater sportscars – the first for Toyota since the legendary 2000GT of the 1960s, which was only ever available in extremely limited numbers.

Hinted at in concept form as far back as 2007, with a variety of different powerplants and chassis derivations, the car finally hit the market in early 2012, powered by a 2.0-litre version of Subaru’s flat-four boxer engine with Toyota direct-injection, producing 200PS (197bhp), driving the rear wheels through a slick 6-speed manual transmission.

Like the Mazda MX-5 before it, this was a model that had ‘instant classic’ status from Day 1, combining sufficient ‘oomph’ with Aluminium panels for low weight and a nimble chassis for excellent driver feel. Almost instantly, the vast army of determined Toyota tuning specialists began producing specials and upgrades, with TRD joining in the action, producing race and rally variants as well.

With the arrival of the Gen 2 model in 2021, Toyota went into overdrive, marketing the face-lifted and upgraded 86 under the GR (Gazoo Racing) banner. With output boosted to 235PS (232bhp) from 2.4-litres, a 50% stiffer chassis and a host of under-the-skin as well as cosmetic, changes, the 86 took on a new lease of life. The increased capacity offered more power and more torque, slashing the 0-60 time to 5.4 seconds and increasing the top speed to 140mph. A true sportscar and one more than worthy of the GR badge.

The car:

This superb example of the GR86 was registered on 28th October 2022 and absolutely looks every inch the classis sportscar, resplendent in its Ignition Red coachwork and sitting on contrasting gloss black alloys, with gloss black highlights.

Trimmed in black, with Aluminium-coloured highlights – and classic details such as the drilled pedals - the cozy cockpit is a driver’s delight, with a great feel to the steering wheel and the short-throw 6-speed gear lever falling perfectly to hand.
