Background

As globally recognisable as a black cab or London bus, the Land Rover Defender has been an icon for 75 years and few vehicles have ever defined a market in the way the ‘Landie’ has. 67 years of continuous production ended in January 2016, with more than 2,000,000 built since the original Series I first left assembly lines in 1948. Loved and relied upon by farmers, industry and the military, Land Rovers have saved lives, won wars, delivered aid and hope, conveyed Kings and Queens and numerous Popes, venturing where few others could manage. The Land Rover has conquered ravines, deserts and snow, broken records and, along the way, won the hearts of millions.

The Car

Offered here is a 2009 110 Defender fitted with the 120bhp 2.4-litre TDCi four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It has covered just 35,000 miles from new, having been stored by previous owners for a few years due to work commitments, and was purchased by our vendor at the start of 2022.

During his ownership, a full soft top conversion has been carried out. The work included creating a canopy with sides and rear which roll up, with full supporting frame. A bespoke Iroko wood floor has been fitted to front, rear and tailgate, and rear bench seats with seatbelts are installed (three persons each side.) Additional enhancements included matching seat covers all round, a wood-rim steering wheel, a rear wheel-carrier and a 'Heritage' grille upgrade.

Summary

Finished in its original Keswick Green and sitting on a set of factory 'Boost' alloys shod with B.F Goodrich 'All Terrain' tyres, this unique Defender looks seriously cool in our opinion and is perhaps the ultimate go-anywhere-in-any-weather soft top.
