SUMMARY
A gloriously resplendent 308 GT4 in the perfect colour combination, UK-delivered, low mileage and Ferrari Classiche-certified, with exceptional provenance and history
DESCRIPTION
Background:
Launched in 1974 as the Dino 308 GT4, the sharply dressed four-seater penned by Marcelo Gandini was remarkable for three reasons; firstly, it was the first production Ferrari with Bertone rather than Pininfarina bodywork. Secondly, it replaced the flowing organic form of the outgoing Dino 246 with a much more angular look and thirdly, it was the first production Ferrari model to feature the mid-mounted V8 drivetrain, which formed the bulk of the company’s output for the following decades.
The chassis was a tubular spaceframe, based on the Dino 246 but stretched by 255cm (100") to allow a second row of seats. Fully-independent suspension featured all round, with double wishbones and anti-roll bars at each corner.
But the jewel was the 2.9-litre V8, mounted transversally amidships and featuring an aluminium alloy block and heads, 16 valves and dual overhead camshafts driven by toothed belts. The new motor produced 255bhp (188 kW) breathing through four Weber 40 DCNF carburettors and driving the rear wheels via a 5-speed transaxle.
The second series of the GT4 was eased into production during 1975, with Ferrari script and Cavallino Rampante badging appearing on the nose, steering wheel and wheel centres, among a number of changes under the skin, as the Dino brand experiment was brought to a close, the car referred to as a Ferrari from that point forward.
The car:
This stunning UK-supplied right-hand drive example was first registered in October 1979. It was subject to Classiche evaluation by Ferrari in 2009 and has been certified ever since. It has covered a little over 65,000 miles in nearly 45 years.
Finished in the perfect combination of Rosso Chiaro with leather Sabbia and Alcantara inserts, this example presents with beautiful originality. It currently sits on almost new 16" Superformance original 5-spoke design alloys in gold and is fitted with a quick rack to ensure that direct steering feedback.
Since purchasing the car in 1985, the second owner ensured that Graypaul Ferrari of Nottingham cared for the car continuously, earning and ensuring its ongoing Classiche status. Further to this yearly maintenance, Graypaul also bestowed on the car a full engine and gearbox rebuild, with clutch replacement.
It is also complete with a wonderful box full of history including two large folders, Classiche folder, books and a tool set and jack also accompany the car.
The 308 GT4 is practical, it has a reasonably sized boot and the rear seats provide additional space. The iconic shape has aged gracefully and the renewed interest in the 308 GT4 has been reflected in the way prices have begun to appreciate in recent years.
Summary:
This easily qualifies as one of, if not the, best GT4 available today. Its provenance, history and mileage are without question - a truly exceptional and reassuring honour amongst classic Ferraris.
