SUMMARY
A remarkable piece of motorsport memorabilia, the front-end bonnet section from one of the most famous McLarens built, the 'Harrods' F1 GTR.
DESCRIPTION
This lot comprises a genuine front end bonnet section from one such McLaren F1 GTR: chassis 06R. More famously known as the ‘Harrods’ GTR, this car was first campaigned by Mach One Racing, sponsored by the world-renowned department store, in its yellow and green livery.
The car competed across the 1995 and 1996 seasons, driven primarily by Andy Wallace and Justin Bell, as well as Karl Wendlinger and Olivier Grouillard. It scored outright victories in the 1995 BPR Silverstone 4 Hours and Nogaro 4 Hours, and the Zhuhai 3 Hours season closer in China. Most notably, it was one of the GTRs to compete at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, claiming third place overall and second in the GT1 class behind the famous ‘Ueno Clinic’ car.
Ahead of the 1997 season, the car was sold to Martin Veyhle Racing in Germany, and its livery was refreshed in silver and black (though evidently with the Harrods finish still present underneath, as revealed by the stone chipped areas on this bonnet section). The car was not competitive, and its last period race is understood to have been the Silverstone 4 Hours in May 1997. Following its motorsport campaigns, chassis 06R was sold to David Clark, former director of McLaren Cars’ road and race car programmes. Since then, the car has been refinished in the original yellow and green ‘Harrods’ livery, and treated to a road-legal conversion by Lanzante.
This very rare piece of bodywork dates from 06R’s 1997 season at Martin Veyhle Racing. It is fabricated from carbon-fibre, finished in black and silver, and is presented in very good ‘as raced’ condition. It measures 191x152x50 cm (approximately 75x60x20 inches), and weighs around 10kg.
This genuine McLaren F1 GTR front end bonnet section is a remarkable piece of motorsport memorabilia; a piece of carbon-fibre bodywork from one of the most famous McLarens built, which is a frequent sight at revival gatherings around the world. It would be an outstanding addition to any collection of racing artefacts, or a sensational gift for any dedicated McLaren fan.
