It’s Raining Fast Fords at Silverstone Auctions Next Sale!

1986 Ford RS200 guided at £240,000 - £280,000

Nothing succeeds like success so it’s no surprise that the next Silverstone sale has some stunning Fast Fords coming to the party. Headed by a RS200 formerly the property of Alan Fenwick, Director of the RS200 Owners Club and a sensational RS Escort Cosworth with only 76 miles from new. For the growing army of Fast Ford Fans this sale promises to be a field of dreams.

Gary Dunne, Sales Manager at Silverstone Auctions says: "Fresh from the success of the remarkable RS500 sold by us earlier this year for £596,250, we have now consigned a number of very special Fords for our Supercar Fest Sale. We know that the demand for Fast Fords is outstripping their supply as their popularity continues to grow. It will be interesting to see in this next Sale if they’ve reached their auction peek or have more to give.”

The 1986 Ford RS200 (pictured below) was formerly the property of Alan Fenwick, Director of the RS200 Owners Club, the car has covered a warranted 8,442 miles and was comprehensively restored by Arch Motors in 2014.

These RS200s are blisteringly fast with 0-60mph delivered in just 3.8 seconds, and this is a fully-specified example with all the bells and whistles and with a truly unrepeatable history file, running and driving exceptionally well. After 33 years of ownership, it’s time for this low mileage RS200 to find its next home, perfectly suited to any enthusiast or collector alike. This is a real 'pride and joy' example of these very rare 'Group B’ rally-cars-for-the- road and #113 in gleaming Diamond White is a must for any collection of Performance Fords or significant motorcars.
The RS200 was born in the era of Group B rallying, undeniably the most extreme period in rally history with all competing manufacturers turning every dial up to 11. The power was immense, the courses dangerous and no matter how high the driver skill was, it was always outmatched by the sheer bravery of piloting these machines at full chat. While Ford’s competitors derived their rally cars out of road cars, Lancia with their S4 Integrale, Audi with their S1 Quattro and Peugeot with their T16 205, Ford took a more extreme route and built a rally car and derived a road car from it purely to tick the homologation boxes. With time, it has become clear that Ford did not manage to sell 200, with Justin Smith, the Ford RS200 authority, believing as few as 147 were actually sold!
The RS200 presented here, Chassis #113 is very special, having just one former keeper, and single enthusiast ownership since 1990 when our vendor purchased the car from Alan Fenwick on just 152 delivery/transportation miles. Since then, it has been treated to the most outstanding life, accomplishing everything one would do given the opportunity of owning an RS200 from new, including track days at Goodwood, Brands Hatch, Donnington, Silverstone, and Thruxton.

1996 Ford Escort Cosworth Lux 2.0 (76 miles) guided at £150,000 - £180,000

Perhaps the lowest mileage example of Ford's 'other Cosworth' to be offered this century. Silverstone Auctions are renowned worldwide for the very best Fast Fords to be offered at auction. As such occasionally we come across what can only be described as an unrepeatable car, and we have little doubt that this offering is unlikely to ever be matched in terms of its originality and 'as new' condition.

Just like the Lancia Integrale and Subaru Impreza, the Escort Cosworth was a 'Group A' rally car for the road - pure and simple. It was actually underpinned by a shortened version of the Sierra Cosworth RS Cosworth's platform and powered by the same 2.0-litre turbocharged, longitudinally-mounted, Cosworth-developed engine driving all four wheels.

The car was designed and engineered in Boreham, styled by noted designer Stephen Harper, and ended up being assembled by Karmann in Germany. At the car's launch in 1994, two models were available, the Club-spec standard car and the 'Lux' version, which included electric windows, heated screen, sunroof, and Recaro seats. Power was up slightly from the Sierra RS Cosworth, at 227bhp, and performance consequently improved. The first 2,500 cars up to May 1994 suffered from slight turbo-lag, but the next 4,500 were improved, thanks to their smaller Garrett T25 Turbo. In 1995, the RS Cosworth was treated to a mild facelift, receiving a new honeycomb grille, restyled bumpers, a more attractive fascia, and revised alloy wheels. Manufacture continued until early 1996 when emissions regulations forced it out of production. Like pretty much every RS Ford, it was a classic from the moment it arrived on the market.

The car we offer here is one of the very last Escort Cosworth Lux’s produced, and astonishingly has been enjoyed by just two keepers from new. The first owner kept the car of his dreams for 13 years and our collector vendor acquired it 14 years ago. When he set out to find the best example available, he found this one. We understand that an industrial accident had allowed the car's first owner sufficient funds to acquire the top of the range Escort Cosworth that he had always dreamed about, however, the nature of his accident meant that it was unlikely that he could ever enjoy it. Miraculously, he regained his health several years later but, after much consideration, decided to leave it safe in its cosy storage.

Our vendor felt the same way when he bought the Cosworth in 2009 and the car continued to be cossetted and maintained as it had been in the care of the very well known Ford specialists, Tremona Garage of Southampton. They confirmed "We have maintained the car since 2009 and when he bought it. Every six months we would go the storage facility and start and run the car, checking it and cleaning it. Subsequently, we agreed to check it over once every year since 2014 without starting it, until preparing it for this sale."

Amazingly, the car has never had the front number plates attached and consequently, the front bumper is exactly as it was some 27-years ago and doesn't even have the Ford lug-holes drilled. Naturally, it would be incorrect to describe anything that's nearly thirty years old as 'new' or 'almost new' but this remarkable little Cossie is about as close as you are likely to get. With 76 miles on the odometer, fully maintained and in this exceptional condition we imagine that the car will join a Private Collection of low-mileage Fords and we shall have to see which of those collections merits this unrepeatable opportunity.

1979 Ford Escort - Russell Brooks' Manx Rally Winning Car – guided at £150,000 - £170,000

Like no other Ford Escort we’ve ever seen, this is one of three ‘Monte Tarmac Specials’, Russell Brooks' 1979 Manx Rally Winning Car which will be on sale with Silverstone Auctions on May 20th for £150,000 - £170,000.

It is often said that the ‘tarmac specials’ – VHK 74S, VHK 47S and GVX 489T, were the fastest tarmac-spec Escorts ever built at Boreham, beating the likes of the Lancia Stratos, Porsche and other exotica on such events as the demanding Monte Carlo Special Stages, a stunning rally car that could possibly hold its own even today. A very famous and well documented ‘Works’ Escort with an unquestionable history that would grace any serious Ford competition car collection.

One of three ‘Monte Tarmac Specials’ built by Ford Motorsport in 1979 and the only right-hand drive car, GVX 489T, it was campaigned by Russell Brookes in the RACMSA British Open Rally Championship that year, one of the most hotly contested championships at the time, taking the spoils in the arduous Mopar Manx International Trophy Rally co-driven by Paul White.

The Manx event was the fifth round in the home international rally championship series and was held on September 14th/15th over 270 miles of closed public roads in and around the TT course. The 1979 rally was the latest in a line dating from 1963 and had a top class entry from Ford, Saab, Dealer Team Vauxhall, Talbot Sunbeam and Leyland ST.

Within the first three stages, all three top seeds were eliminated! Stig Blomqvist’s SAAB Turbo broke a driveshaft after seven miles, Hannu Mikkola’s Escort snapped a steering arm (as did Malcolm Wilson’s similar car later in the event), whilst Pentti Airikkala had a substantial accident in the DTV Chevette. The first day was all about Tony Pond and his 2.2-litre Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, however, the engine expired whilst Pond was leading comfortably, leaving Russell Brookes (works Escort RS) and DTV Number-2 driver, Jimmy McRae, to fight for victory on the final Saturday. Despite heroic efforts from McRae, including a time 5 seconds faster than Brookes over the longest stage, that saw the Vauxhall’s gear lever fall out at one point, Russell Brookes and Paul White in GVX 489T scored a worthy victory, albeit by only 14 seconds.

Subsequently, the car moved to Ireland in the hands of, reputedly, Ireland's finest rally driver, Billy Coleman, and was later driven by other rallying luminaries such as Bertie Fisher and Vincent Bonner. In 2003, ‘GVX’ arrived at Montgomery Motorsport where a rebuild and a thorough refresh were deemed necessary to be dutifully carried out retaining the original shell, initially refinished in Bertie Fisher's graphics but later changed to Billy Coleman's colours, which it wears to this day.
