Race Ready Cars with Win History & Rock Star Provenance for Sale with Iconic Auctioneers on 18th May - Once Owned by Rock Legend, Jason Kay of Jamiroquai
1973 BMW 'CSL Batmobile' 3.5-Litre. Estimate: £160,000 - £180,000 - Once owned by rock legend, Jason Kay of Jamiroquai
This is a car that was successfully campaigned by Iconic Auctioneers’ own Chairman Nick Whale, and adding to the glamour was also owned by rock legend, Jason Kay of Jamiroquai. You could say this is a car for a ‘Supersonic’ ‘Space Cowboy’!
This, FIA-spec, 3.5-litre 'Batmobile' enjoys rock-star provenance and is eligible for some of the best historic motorsport in the world (including the Le Mans Classic). It was converted from a 3.0 CS (E9) road car in the late 1980s by saloon racer, the late Tim Busby, and accumulated many excellent race results over the following 35 years on racetracks all over the world. In 2004, it was sold to Iconic Auctioneers owner, Nick Whale, and co-owned with Ian Guest. The pair campaigned the car in Patrick Peter's Classic Endurance Racing series 'CER' throughout Europe, including twice at Classic Le Mans in 2004 and 2006 where it won its 'Plateau' on both occasions. It also won the coveted Index of Performance award at the 2006 Classic Le Mans, as well as further class wins at Monza, Silverstone and Spa.
It was then sold to Alan Tice who successfully campaigned the car for two or three seasons in the Masters Series, before changing hands again in 2013 to rock legend, Jason Kay of Jamiroquai. During Jay's ownership, a lot of money was invested in the car's mechanicals and Jay enjoyed a track day at Silverstone during his ownership.
In 2017, Jason asked Iconic Auctioneers to auction the Batmobile at the Race Retro auction, when it was purchased by the current owner who then entrusted marque specialists, Laranca Engineering, with preparing the car for a return to the European racing scene. Six figures-plus were invested with Laranca going through the car fully to bring it up to the more strenuous modern standards of historic motorsport. FIA papers were then issued (GB11382) and remain valid until 31st December 2027.
Under current ownership, the 'Batmobile' has raced successfully in various Peter Auto events across Europe. The car was invited to a recent Le Mans Classic but sadly our vendor couldn’t attend as he now lives in South America, which is the reason for a reluctant sale.
The last mechanical refresh came in early 2021, but the car has not been raced since so the Batmobile is now available for its next lucky owner. Offering access into some of the best Historic Motorsport in the world, including the legendary Le Mans Classic, this fabulous race car is being offered at a seriously tempting guide price (£160,000 - £180,000) when you consider what it would cost to replicate, the asking price for similar cars and its proven 35 years-plus race record.
Tony Pond & Marc Duez 1985 MG Metro 6R4 'Group B' ex-works 'C870 EUD' Monte Carlo rally car. Estimate: £350,000 - £450,000
In the early 1980s, fully aware of the influence of motorsport success on their sales figures, the British Leyland hierarchy was seeking another vehicle to carry the company name to sporting success however, in reality there were no obvious candidates. It was only with the announcement of a new 'Group B' category for rally cars that the way became clear for what was to become the 6R4 programme. Under the new regulations, only 200 units were required for 'homologation' plus 20
'Evolution' models and there were relatively few design restrictions. Turbocharged engines, four-wheel drive, state of the art materials and lots of aero mods were allowed resulting, over the next four years, in some of the wildest and most powerful competition machines ever produced.
As is well documented elsewhere, the world of International Rallying was devastated in 1985/1986 by a number of high-profile fatal accidents resulting in 'Group B' rally cars being outlawed for the 1987 season, effectively ending the 6R4's international career. Because of its long gestation period, the 6R4 undoubtedly arrived one or two years too late. Its performance on the 1985 RAC Rally - its best-ever placing - indicated that an earlier start could have yielded much better results, certainly in the 1986 learning year. However, perhaps because of their slightly macabre 'bad-boy' reputation or maybe due to their ballistic performance potential and the short timespan in which they ruled, genuine 'Works' 'Group B' rally cars have become incredibly valuable, rivalled only by F1 cars with serious provenance and Le Mans winners. Consequently, we are delighted to be able to offer this genuine Works 6R4, C870 EUD.
Chassis #207 made its debut on the highly prestigious 1986 Monte Carlo Rally driven by the late Tony Pond with co-driver, Rob Arthur, and indeed the opening television footage of the 1986 Monte Carlo Rally is predominantly of Tony Pond in this very car. We are informed that #207 has never been crashed, used by privateers in a detuned specification or rally crossed, and the car has been preserved in full period specification for its entire life. With the exception of being used on two demonstration events by the car’s current owner of 22 years, it appears to have only been used four times since its retirement, however it has been much admired on display at the Williams F1 Museum for many years and has made appearances in the lobby of the RAC Club in Pall Mall, a privilege reserved for only a few vehicles considered to have played an important part in the history of motorsport.
Enjoying the distinction of having been a 'Works' 'Group B' car at two WRC events including the Monte, coupled with the fact that it remains in the very latest specification as developed ‘in period’ means that, in our opinion, C870 EUD is undoubtedly one of the best examples currently available. Its exceptional originality and full ownership history represent an unrepeatable opportunity and we welcome any enquiries and requests for appointments to view this important ex-Works MG Metro 6R4.
1965 FIA BMW 1800 TI FIA. Estimate: £40,000 - £45,000
This car is a well-known, race-proven, right-hand drive BMW 1800 TI, run and prepared to the highest standards. Before becoming a well-seasoned race car, the TI was campaigned in rallying by Jill Watson during the 1990s and there is an accompanying history file with the car containing more information on its busy and impressive life.
The BMW’s last engine refresh was in 2018 by Laranca and since then it’s completed one race in 2018 at the Oldtimer event at the Nürburgring and hasn’t been campaigned since. The current owner has moved to South America and has reluctantly decided that it’s time to let it go.
