One of the most intriguing lots is a pair Nomex racing gloves worn by the Late Diana, Princess of Wales. On 9th July 1992, Diana, Princess of Wales visited Buckmore Park in Kent with Princes William and Harry for a private karting experience. These were the red Nomex gloves that she wore whilst driving. First auctioned to raise funds for the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and subsequently featured on the TV show Four Rooms around 12 years ago, this is the first time they have been offered for auction in over 25 years. Framed and with a plaque reading 'Worn by H.R.H Princess Diana Princess of Wales 9-7-92', they are presented with a Certificate of Authenticity and additional paperwork.
Lot 824: Diana, Princess of Wales-Worn Nomex Racing Gloves. Estimate £7,000 - £9,000
The late Sir Stirling Moss’s race helmet pictured above is the one he wore when winning the 1955 Mille Miglia and the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix, and he described it as his “favourite”. This is another of the highly desirable automobilia and collectible lots on offer from the well-known collector, Peter Ratcliffe whose ‘Legends in Time’ Retirement Sale forms part of the Iconic Auctioneers Sale on Sunday 25th August.
The white Moss helmet is accompanied by a bespoke display case, plaque, a Certificate of Authenticity and comes with a signed copy of the book Racedrivers by Benno Muller with a personal note written by Moss, 'You would be pushed to find a better shot of my helmet than this' with a photograph of him signing this iconic piece. This is a unique opportunity to own, without doubt, the most successful and most photographed motor racing helmet in the history of motorsport and is estimated at £80,000 - £100,000.
When acquiring the helmet in 1993, Ratcliffe asked Moss if he could remember any races he had won wearing the helmet. Stirling confirmed 'Well this is my Herbert Johnson helmet, my 'favourite' helmet that I wore in the Mille Miglia and also the 1961 Monaco GP'. He also confirmed that he wore it mainly between 1953 and 1961 when he began using a Patey helmet once again. He thought that he had worn it in at least 100 races including many Grand Prix victories.
Moss had his helmets repainted at the end of every season due to stone chips, oil and general wear. The current paint was applied around 1992 and Stirling ceased to wear it after painting. The side curtains have been renewed several times because of wear and tear over the years, but the leatherwork to the rear and inside the helmet are original and have never been changed. The interior shows signs of heavy use with a wonderful patina from years of racing. There is even a sticky label on which Moss wrote his blood group!
Formula 1 and motorsport fan Peter Ratcliffe first established Legends in Time in 1988. It all started with a chance meeting with legendary motorsport artist Alan Stammers. Ratcilffe immediately recognised Stammer’s talent and so he decided to create a challenge to sign up all of the world’s greatest drivers with Stammer’s incredibly detailed images.
During that journey Ratcliffe also began collecting driver’s helmets, Formula 1 cars and all items connected with Formula 1. In 1996 Ratcliffe’s close friend, Sir Stirling Moss, opened the first of four Legends in Time galleries.
Friends, Sir Stirling Moss and Peter Ratcliffe
In later years, Ratcliffe developed his watch company creating fine quality Swiss watches to commemorate Moss’s greatest victories. Ratcliffe is the first person ever to create a hand-signed watch. Peter has worked with all the greats including Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Jack Brabham, Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Nelson Piquet and many others.
Speaking of the auction Ratcliffe says: “I have treasured many of the items offered in the auction and I now feel it is time for someone else to become their custodian and enjoy them as I have done over many years.”
The eclectic mix of items Iconic Auctioneers are offering on his behalf include portraits of many of the race greats including Juan Manuel Fangio and a model of his Grand Prix-Winning Mercedes-Benz W196R #18 from the French Grand Prix held on 4th July 1954 in Reims.
