RALLY ICON PRODRIVE P25, THE FIRST SOLD AT AUCTION, SELLS FOR £562,500 & AN AUCTION WORLD RECORD FOR A 1983 TALBOT SUNBEAM LOTUS SERIES 2,

Just two of the highlights sold by Iconic Auctioneers at Race Retro on Saturday 22nd February

This was the moment collectors had waited years for – the sale at auction of this rally icon, reimagined, redefined, and recreated using its original DNA to deliver the ultimate competition car for the road. And the result did not disappoint – it sold for an eye watering £562,500.

Serial Number One of 25 was offered directly from its first and only owner with just 121 miles from new.  As the name implies, just 25 highly personalised examples left Prodrive over a two-year period.

Harry Whale, Car Specialist at Iconic Auctioneers says of the car: “It is a homage to the world's original affordable sports car and the heroic drivers who wrote them into motorsport folklore, the Prodrive P25 is not only an amazing car to drive in the real world, but it’s also a true collector’s piece, much like the preceding 22B.”

“Iconic Auctioneers were extremely proud to offer Serial Number 001, a right-hand drive example, directly from its first and only owner having covered just 121 miles since purchase. This was the first time such a car was offered in a live auction, giving someone an unrepeatable opportunity to join a rather exclusive and illustrious club.”

world and sold for £25,300.

Another masterpiece in this sale, offered from the same private Collector, was a Ford RS200 S homologation special as pictured below which sold for £305,000. One of 20 built to 350bhp S specification with just 1,404 gentle miles covered in the last 35 years. The car had enjoyed a serious level of expert investment in recent times. Tolman Motorsport was appointed to carry out a sympathetic recommissioning, ensuring that the car came up to very high standards and was mechanically ready to go. Over £70,000 was invested into this special RS200 and the results were clear to see

Iconic Auctioneers are well known for their sales of competition cars, in particular homologation specials, so it was great to see both the ‘Group B’ and Road version of the iconic 6R4 go under the hammer at this Race Retro Sale. The 1986 MG Metro 6R4 'Group B' Ex-Works 'C818 FFC', chassis #208, was in fact the third Ex Works 6R4 the company have sold, and this example did not disappoint. Having competed in the infamous 1986 Rallye de Portugal for Tony Pond and Rob Arthur, it had since been successfully campaigned, including winning the Tempest Rally in 1999 and numerous class wins at the Rallye Sunseeker from 1997 to 2012. More recently, ‘C818 FFC’ has become synonymous with Goodwood, entertaining the crowds on the Goodwood Festival of Speed rally stage on no less than 16 occasions from 2005 to 2024. The car sold for an impressive £270,000.

The road registered 6R4 which was also sold at this Sale was a 1987 MG Metro 6R4 Clubman with just 3,423 miles. Sold for £200,500, it had been sympathetically mechanically refreshed by its long-term owner and was as close to a totally correct original 'Clubman' as you will find.  Lionel Abbot the car’s specialist who consigned the car said, “This is a remarkable example of a 6R4 Clubman, it has a perfect timeline, escaping any competition use and is truly on the button with an impeccable maintenance record that is fully documented in its history file”.

And finally, but equally as impressive was the 1983 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus Series 2 which sold for £58,500 setting a new Live Auction World Record. Only 1,184 right-hand drive examples of the Sunbeam Lotus were ever built approximately half the total number. However, today you'd be lucky to find 80 of these special cars according to the owners’ club, so it was fantastic to see this beautifully presented Series 2 which had been subject to a remarkable 'Open Seam' restoration set at new live auction World Record.
