SUMMARY

Very well presented Indian version of the Willys Jeep, fully restored in Western Australia during 2016.

DESCRIPTION

Background:

Mahindra was established in 1948 and saw a business opportunity in selling off-road vehicles, starting by assembling under licence the Willys Jeep in India. Soon, M&M became the Jeep manufacturer in India and later commenced manufacturing light commercial vehicles and agricultural tractors. Jeep was bought by American Motors Corporation in 1970, Jeeps continued to be built by Mahindra under licence from AMC and subsequently, under Chrysler after Chrysler acquired AMC in 1987.

In December 1989, Mahindra launched its 4x4 off-road SUV range, consisting of licence-built versions of the Jeep CJ. These were powered by four-cylinder, 2.1-litre Peugeot diesel engines producing 62bhp, and were available in 2,032mm and 2,311mm wheelbase variants. These were sold under Motor Industry Investments, a joint venture between Australian businessman Paul Stoddart and Roger Bastable, founder of the Abby Hill Group.

The Car
The vehicle underwent a full restoration in 2016 in Western Australia. It had a complete nut and bolt restoration and is powered by a 2.1-litre PSA diesel engine producing 62bhp, delivered through a 4-speed manual gearbox with 4 wheel-drive (2-lever).

The interior is believed to be original and is in superb condition for the car’s age. The soft top roof is also believed to be in working order, with the support bars and linkages functioning correctly. This car offers WWII looks with 1990s Peugeot diesel reliability and comfort.

The car has covered just under 90,000 kilometres and will be supplied with a new MOT. It was imported into the UK in 2023, with all the relevant UK tax and registration documentation already completed.
